Slow and Luminous Slow and luminous You bent your brow to my brow, your black fire sunk into my blue fire. And my room grew full of summer, And my room grew full of night. I shut my bright and weeping eyes, I wept silently in my late summer.

I Was Once a Boy I was once a boy, listened to Socrates under porticoes— my bosom friend, my love, possessed the most beautiful torso in Athens. Then, Caesar. And a shimmering world of marble—I, the last of my line, and for a bride, I chose my proud sister. Rose-wreathed, wine-soaked, crazed with pleasure, I heard in the waning hours of the night of the weakling from Nazareth and of the wild exploits of the Jews.

Untitled (“Sleep Take You, My Love” ) Sleep take you, my love, sleep take you. You are like new brown forest-earth. Your eyes, full of sky. I your peace and I your sword, guarding over earth and sky. Each star astounded, hearing what I whisper to you, dreaming.

My Ancestors Speak ….Women like idols, adorned with diamonds, swathed red in Turkish cloth, in heavy folds of satin de Lyon. But their bodies are weeping willows, and their fingers, like dry flowers in their laps, and in their veiled and faded eyes, deadened desire. [...] All of them my tribe, blood of my blood and flame of my flame...
